Extended call for compositions

Deadline: 1 December 2015

We are extending the deadline for the submission of compositions for the first joint BFE/RMA Research Students’ Conference being held at Bangor University from 6 to 8 January 2016. Submissions are invited from current or recent research students. There are two categories:

1. Instrumental compositions for Okeanos

Works will be read and rehearsed with members of Okeanos in an open workshop. Composers must be present for the workshop in which their composition is scheduled. A selection of the works will then be played in an evening concert, alongside other repertoire, for conference delegates.
Submissions should be a maximum of 6 minutes’ duration and scored for some or all of the following:

shakuhachi (doubling khene)
koto
cello
oboe (doubling oboe d’amore and cor anglais)

Factsheets for the shakuhachi, khene and koto may be downloaded from these links. For practical reasons, composers must follow the advice in these factsheets. In addition, you must allow time for change of instruments.

The cellist and oboist can also double on the following percussion instruments if required: rin tuned to G# and F#; glass singing bowl tuned to E; antique cymbals tuned to F; claves; small ocean drum.

Scores will be accepted in all formats (e.g. conventional notation, graphic, text-based). There are no stylistic constraints. You should send separate PDFs of the full score and parts. Where possible, please also send a Sibelius or Finale file of the full score.

Submissions will be judged primarily on aesthetic grounds (originality, musicality, technical skill), but the panel reserves the right to take matters of practicality into consideration.

With each composition submission, please supply a single page in PDF or Microsoft Word format with the following information: name, postal and email address, institutional affiliation, a short biography of no more than 50 words, name of the work, instrumentation, approximate length, and category (i.e. Okeanos). Please send all relevant materials to rsc2016@bangor.ac.uk by Tuesday 1 December 2015.

2. Acousmatic composition for ElectroacousticWales

Works will be played and discussed in an open workshop. Composers must be present for the workshop in which their composition is scheduled. A selection of the works will then be played in an evening concert, alongside other repertoire, for conference delegates.

Submissions should be a maximum of 12 minutes’ duration and should be in the following format:

WAV or .AIFF format
44.1 or 48kHz sampling rate
16 or 24 bit
interleaved channel format only
from 2 to 32 channels

Submissions will be judged primarily on aesthetic grounds (originality, musicality, technical skill), but the panel reserves the right to take matters of practicality into consideration.

The work should be uploaded as a single .ZIP file to an accessible server or cloud service (e.g. DropBox or Google Drive), from which the panel may download it without payment or registration. Please also supply a single page in PDF or Word form with the following information: name, postal and email address, institutional affiliation, a short biography of no more than 50 words, name of the work, length, format (number of channels, etc.), and category (i.e. ‘ElectroacousticWales’). Please send this document, along with the URL weblink from which the work may be downloaded, to rsc2016@bangor.ac.uk by Tuesday 1 December 2015.

Applicants will be notified of the Programme Committee’s decisions by Monday 7 December 2015. Further information about the conference (including information about travel and accommodation) will be available at http://rsc2016.bangor.ac.uk/ from 2 November onwards.
